China Issues Draft Approvals for Four Food-Contact Substances

The Chinese Center for Food Safety and Risk Assessment (CFSA) has released draft approvals for four food-contact substances. The substances—along with CAS number(s), use scope, and maximum use levels—are as follows:

  • Polyethylene
    • ​CAS number: 9002-88-4
    • Use scope: coatings
    • Maximum use level: 3%
    • Note: The use temperature for products with addition of this substance shall not exceed 121℃.
       
  • Silane, dichlorodimethyl-, reaction products with selica
    • CAS number: 68611-44-9
    • Use scope: coatings
    • Maximum use level: 0.5%
    • Note: The use temperature for products with addition of this substance shall not exceed 121℃.
       
  • Magnesium aluminum hydroxide carbonate (hydrate)
    • CAS number: 11097-59-9; 12304-65-3
    • Use scope: coatings
    • Maximum use level: 1%
    • Note: The use temperature for products with addition of this substance shall not exceed 121℃.
       
  • 1-Propanaminium, N,N,N-trimethyl-3-[(1-oxo-2-propen-1-yl)amino]-, chloride (1:1), polymer with ethenamine and 2-propenamide, hydrochloride
    • CAS number: 1659307-53-5
    • Use scope: paper and paper board
    • Maximum use level: 0.2% (calculated as dry paper)
    • Note: Paper and paper board products added with this substance shall not contact with infant formula food and breast milk.
