Microplastics and Food Packaging

Question

Do any of the FDA food packaging regulations deal with microplastics?

Answer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not currently have any regulations that deal specifically with microplastics. On its webpage, titled, Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Foods, FDA states “current scientific evidence do not demonstrate that the levels of microplastics or nanoplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health.” The Agency also points out that since there are no standardized methods to detect, quantify, or characterize microplastics or nanoplastics, “many of the scientific studies [involving microplastics and nanoplastics] have used methods of variable, questionable, and/or limited accuracy and specificity.” However, FDA cautioned that if it determines that the levels of microplastics or nanoplastics cause food to be unsafe, it will take regulatory action.
