On July 26, 2021, the China National Health Commission (NHC) approved 3 new food-contact materials, 9 food-contact materials with expanded usage, and 7 new resins. The substances and specifications are listed below.

New Food-Contact Materials and Articles

Keller and Heckman attorneys and scientists will be among the speakers at the 5th International Conference on Food Contact Compliance in Baveno, Italy, September 25-27. They will be presenting on the following topics:

Partner Jeff Keithline and associate Rachel Bond will present "Food Contact Requirements in Asia and Latin America" at Product Stewardship 2018 on September 27, in Washington, DC. The conference, to be held September 27-29, brings professionals from over a dozen different industry sectors to discuss global emerging issues, case studies, practical experiences, and new developments.

David Ettinger presented "All Wrapped Up: food-contact regulations in China" at the Food Contact Regulations Asia 2017 Conference, held on November 23, 2017 in Singapore. David's presentation will provide an overview of China's Food Safety Law, China's GB Packaging standards and updates, and Chinese Food-Contact Petition procedures. To learn more, click here.

The Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People’s Republic of China (CNCA) issued Green Product Certification Implementation Rules on June 4, 2021 (CNCA Announcement No. 7 of 2021). These rules include revisions to the first batch of 12 Green Product Certification Implementation Rules (CNCA Announcement No. 6 of 2020), including “Green Product Certification Implementation Rules for Wood Plastic Products.”

Keller and Heckman Associate Eric Gu will give a presentation on “Japan’s new Positive List system and criteria on recycled materials for food packaging” at the Recycled Packaging for Food Contact ASIA webinar. Other presenters during this virtual seminar will discuss the current governing rules on the use of recycled content and standards for food-grade applications in China and other key Asian countries. 

Keller and Heckman Partner Mark Thompson, along with Lou Sherman, Chair of the Australasian Pulp and Paper Technical Association (Appita) Food Contact Committee, will discuss recent updates on global food contact regulation for paper and plastics, including regulations for recycled content in food packaging. The discussion also will incorporate the latest developments in Chinese concerning regulations for paper food contact materials and articles.

The Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) on May 11, 2021, concerning four draft food contact regulations. The draft technical regulations are described below.

Keller and Heckman Associate Eric Gu will give a presentation on food packaging regulation in the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on regulatory regimes in China and Japan, at the Vitafoods Insights Virtual Expo, which is being held virtually. The key themes of the expo are mental performance, gut and immune health, sports and active nutrition, healthy ageing.
