Taiwan Announces Application Process for Using rPET in Food Packaging

The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) announced on May 12, 2022, an application process for the use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) chips and flakes in food containers and packaging manufacturing. Per the announcement (in Chinese), PET food containers can be recycled and further processed into ester pellets through processes such as cleaning, chopping, melting, and decontamination if the process had been evaluated and approved by TFDA, then the rPET may be used as raw materials for the manufacture of food utensils, containers, and packaging. TDFA pointed out that the safety assessment of rPET should comply with the safety assessment principles developed by the EU or the U.S.
