How Does the EU Regulate Adhesives

Question

Which European directive is similar to U.S. FDA 21 CFR 175.105 Indirect Food Additives - adhesives?

Answer

There is no legislation at the EU level that is comparable to Section 175.105 covering adhesives in FDA's food additive regulations. Adhesives are exempt from regulation under the Plastics Directive (2002/72/EC), but are covered by the Framework Regulation for food contact materials (1935/2004) and, in some countries, are covered by national laws specific to adhesives. Therefore, in accordance with the Framework Regulation, use of an adhesive in a particular application must be established as safe and in accordance with the national laws of the countries where the adhesive will be marketed, use of the adhesive must comply with any other requirements, such as positive lists for the adhesive components.
