EPA issued interim guidance to clarify the Agency's toxicology data requirements for antimicrobial pesticides used on food-contact surfaces. The interim guidance explains that if pesticide residues in food resulting from use on food-contact surfaces are 200 parts per billion (ppb) or less, EPA requires certain toxicology data. If residues are greater than 200 ppb, additional data may be required. The 200 ppb trigger is based on total estimated daily dietary intake for an individual and not on the amount of residue present on a single food, which is consistent with the U.S.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Stop Sale, Use, or Removal Order (SSURO) to Pathway Investment Corp., Englewood, N.J., for violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) (Docket No. FIFRA 02-2014-5102) with respect to the sale of plastic food storage containers that contain an unregistered antimicrobial pesticide.

Using solutions containing peroxyacetic acid (PAA) to reduce contamination from pathogens on poultry carcasses and meat would not pose toxicity concerns, concluded the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in a scientific opinion. EFSA issued the Scientific Opinion on PAA in response to a request from the European Commission based on an application dossier submitted by the U.S.

The European Union's (EU) Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) (Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012), which entered into force on September 1, 2013, includes food-contact materials and articles in its scope. This is in contrast to the Biocidal Products Directive (BPD), which specifically excluded food-contact materials and articles. The BPD was repealed by the BPR.
