The French Constitutional Court has upheld the legality of the bisphenol A (BPA) ban (law no. 2010-729, as amended by law n° 2012-1442 of 24 December 2012) for products subject to this ban that imported into France or placed on the market in France (Decision no. 2015-480 QPC of Sept. 17, 2015). However, the court ruled that the ban on the manufacture of food-contact materials containing BPA in France for export is unconstitutional since food-contact materials containing BPA may lawfully be placed on the market in other countries. This ruling took effect immediately.

The National Toxicology Program (NTP), part of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, announced that it is evaluating the association between exposures to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and immunotoxicity. As part of the review, NTP requested information about ongoing studies on the immune-related health effects of PFOA and PFOS.

Comments of China's draft amendment to the Hygienic Standards for Uses of Additives in Food Containers and Packaging Materials (GB 9685-2008) are due by March 15, 2015. The draft amendment, published by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) on January 20, 2015, incorporates key revisions to the Standard, such as removing the following use scopes for listed additives: glass, metal, ceramics, and enamel.

China's National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) recently issued several new and expanded clearances for food-contact materials in China. Specifically, NHFCP's Announcement No. 8 (2013) approved four new additives and one new resin for use in food packaging, and expanded clearances for three other additives for food packaging. The chemical substances referenced in the Announcement are listed below.

 

 

The Pew Charitable Trusts recently released its capstone report, Fixing the Oversight of Chemicals Added to Our Food: Findings and Recommendations of Pew's Assessment of the U.S. Food Additives Program. The report is based on a three year review, conducted from 2010 to 2013, of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) food additives regulatory program.
