Challenging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) May 2017 denial of their food additive petition to remove several clearances for perchlorate from food-contact applications, a group of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have requested a formal evidentiary public hearing. (Click here to view the request.) This type of hearing, which would be held before an administrative law judge (ALJ), has not happened since the 1970s.

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission (EC) has published a 332-page baseline study on food-contact materials that are not specifically regulated at the European Union (EU) level, titled, “Non-harmonised food contact materials in the EU: regulatory and market situation.”

The Trump administration issued a directive to manage the Federal regulatory process in the weeks immediately following the inauguration to ensure that presidential appointees or designees have the opportunity to review any new or pending regulations.

The Obama Administration announced in early January the publication of the final version of the 2017 Update to the Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology (Coordinated Framework). (A White House blog post unveiling the final version can be found here.)  The update began in 2015 when the Executive Office of the President (EOP) issued a memorandum directing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S.

The conference will provide an overview on the latest laws and regulations affecting plastics and paper packaging in contact with food. Ms. Semail’s presentation is titled, “National European regulations for non-harmonized FCM inks and coatings.”
