The Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2014, sponsored by Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.) is substantially the same bill as the Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2013 (H.R. 2248) and the Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2011 (H.R. 432), both introduced by then Rep. Edward J. Markey.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on June 2, the availability of "Compliance Policy Guide Sec. 100.250 Food Facility Registration – Human and Animal Food" (CPG). The CPG provides guidance for FDA staff on the enforcement of the food facility registration provisions of section 415 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), which were amended by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) to require more information.

The European Commission (EC) has issued a regulation establishing maximum levels of cadmium in chocolate products and infant foods and adjusting maximum levels for other food products. Commission Regulation (EU) No 488/2014 amends Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006, which sets maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Management Board has appointed Dr. Berhard Url Executive Director of the Authority, effective June 1, 2014. A veterinarian by training, Dr. Url has been EFSA's acting Executive Director since September 2013. He joined EFSA in June 2012 as Director of Risk Assessment and Scientific Assistance.

A Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) survey found that all of the canned foods tested for Bisphenol A (BPA) were safe to consume. CFIA conducted the study between 2011 and 2012 to test the migration level of BPA in 403 canned food samples. BPA was not detected in 98.5% of the canned foods tested, while six of the canned food contained only trace amounts.

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) has approved France's proposal to strengthen the harmonized classification and labelling (CLH) of bisphenol A (BPA) from a category 2 reproductive toxin to a category 1B toxin. France submitted the proposal in August 2013, claiming that BPA adversely affected sexual function and fertility.

Using solutions containing peroxyacetic acid (PAA) to reduce contamination from pathogens on poultry carcasses and meat would not pose toxicity concerns, concluded the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in a scientific opinion. EFSA issued the Scientific Opinion on PAA in response to a request from the European Commission based on an application dossier submitted by the U.S.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) proposed rule on the Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal (see 79 Federal Register 7006 (Feb. 5, 2014)) would apply to shippers, receivers, and carriers (with some exceptions) who transport food in the U.S. by motor or rail vehicles.

The Legislative Affairs Office of China's State Council published on October 29, 2013, draft revisions to Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China (Draft) and requested comments on the draft proposal by November 29, 2013. Overall, the draft reflects a trend in strengthening the regulation of food and food-related products (e.g., food additives and food packaging materials) in China and incorporates new provisions that are now contained in various food regulations.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) proposed rule to implement the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) component of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) (78 Fed. Reg. 45730 (July 29, 2013)) establishes the activities that importers of food must undertake to ensure that the food they bring into the United States is safe.
